Lunar New Year
Festival
Lunar New Year is a significant celebration in many East Asian cultures, marking the start of the lunar calendar. It’s a time for reflection on the past and a warm welcome to new beginnings. The festivities typically last for 15 days and include family reunions, delicious food, the giving of red envelopes, and various cultural activities such as dragon and lion dances.
The San Diego Lunar New Year Festival is a three-day event featuring a vibrant array of folk and traditional performances, arts and cultural exhibitions, lion dances, firecrackers, and numerous family-friendly activities. A highlight of the festival will be the Cultural Village, which aims to recreate the traditional villager lifestyle of Southeast Asia. Most importantly, this inclusive and festive event is open to the public and free of charge.
Research Survey
Little Saigon SD and APAC of Hoover High School are collaborating on a research survey to gain insights into your experience with the sidewalks in the Little Saigon District, specifically the 6-block stretch of El Cajon Blvd. between Highland Ave and Euclid Ave. As part of our Little Saigon Revitalization Initiatives, we are undertaking a series of projects aimed at transforming public sidewalks and city streets into vibrant, welcoming spaces that enhance the overall walking experience. If you have walked through this stretch of sidewalks before, you have a unique perspective on the needs and experiences, and we need your help. We are eager to understand your experiences, perspectives, and opinions on the current state of the sidewalks and how we can improve your walking experience. The survey will take 2-5 minutes to complete. Your responses are completely confidential. Thank you for your time!

Umbrella Trees
Next project on the Little Saigon Revitalization Initiatives is the Umbrella Tree with a mission to tagibilizing the intangible cultural assets that make up the identity, character, and customs of Little Saigon District. To do this, we aim to bring to life the inspirations stories and journeys of Vietnamese Americans immigrants that contributed to the identity, characters, and customs of the Little Saigon District. Approximately 20 unique stories will be engraved on 20 plaques, to be installed on 20 urban street planters, and will be placed within the 6-block stretch of the Little Saigon District of San Diego. The planter will feature an umbrella tree growing out of it. These planters with umbrella trees are currently being design by Tecture Design and Fabrication.
50 Years Anniversary
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon and the birth of Little Saigon (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025), Little Saigon San Diego anticipate publishing a special edition highlighting the development of the Vietnamese community. This edition will showcase the journey of arriving with only the clothes on our backs to our present achievements.
To accomplish this, we seek your assistance. Over the next few months, we will circulate a survey aimed at gathering data from all Vietnamese residents. This data will provide a comprehensive view of the Vietnamese community in San Diego County, including statistics such as the number of Vietnamese Americans in healthcare, the military, police departments, government offices, and more. The objective of this initiative is to underscore the resilience and 50-year contributions of the Vietnamese community to the larger San Diego community.
However, we cannot achieve this without your participation. Please stay informed and watch out for the survey, and encourage your friends and neighbors to participate as well. At the 50th anniversary event, we will unveil the impactful results of our survey.

Boat People Garden
Boat People Garden is a small mini park / public open space by convert an under-utilized private property and integrate with existing pedestrian pathways for an innovative public space complete with sitting areas, resting benches, and landscaping gardens. The garden will include an interactive sculpture of Vietnamese Boat People dedicated to the courage, determination and willpower of the many Vietnamese refugees who never yielded to suppression and to honor those refugees who perished while still holding onto the dream of freedom. This mini park will be the first in an ongoing series of Little Saigon Revitalization Initiatives to redefine and transform public sidewalks and city streets into public gathering areas and reshaping the sidewalk experience.
